Hollister Trip

June 10, 2007

I bought a 1984 K30 about a week before in LA, and drove it home. After spending the week fixing little things and tuning it up, this was a trip designed as a "shake down" run for the new truck. I went with my good friend Greyson (he was driving the Black Diesel K5) and we had an absolute BLAST!!!

The pictures are in no particular order.

If you look carefully in this next picture, you can see that I added hinged latches to my cooler. Everyone made fun of me for modifying a cooler, but I was happy to not have to worry about my sandwich falling out if I rolled over!!! Plus, it allowed me to not have to strap over the top.

Here is my Friend Alan driving on the edge of the mini-Rubicon rock pile. This wasn't really very tricky an obstacle but it was fun.

Here is my friend Conrad Driving. I asked him if h wanted to drive, and he said "Only on one of these dirt roads!" Within about 60 seconds, he was running a dry river bed. I am the one in the blue shirt, supposedly acting as a spotter. Ha!

And this is the scrape on the front from where Conrad rubbed the wall in the river bed. He could hardly believe that not only did I not care about the scratch, I kinda liked it!

This is probably the best picture of the trip. This is a shot (taken from the cab of my truck) showing how close Greyson actually got to rolling his truck. REALLY close. He had three other people in the truck with him at the time, too!

To get him out, we tied a 3 inch wide tie down strap to his front tow hook, then adjusted in tighter and tighter as he drove forward. This kept his front down, kept him from flipping, and helped him make forward progress.

Here is the front of the truck as we were about half way through recovery.

Here's a Link to My K30 driving up the same hill as above (You Tube)

Greyson wound up horsing around in this gulley, and it was really steep on the way out. Rather than have him bash the front of his truck against it, I just strapped up and tugged him out. He probably would have made it, but this just made it easier.
